Run a Small Botanical Color Trial

Adult extension of: Plant Dye Lab

February 22–26, 2027 · planned

Compare cooled botanical color samples on a consistent paper or fabric substrate and document the limits of the result.

Curriculum skill focus: Color comparison, prediction, sorting, recording

01 · Learning

Objectives

  • Label the identified plant source, substrate, preparation, and sample number.
  • Apply cooled color with tools and place each labeled sample on a drying tray.
  • Make a sample card that distinguishes observed color from untested durability or skin-safety claims.

02 · Preparation

Materials

Adult-prepared cooled plant-color liquids in labeled containers; Paper or fabric test strips; trays and tongs; Gloves or no-touch roles, color chart, towels

03 · Practice

Adult project

  1. 1

Label the identified plant source, substrate, preparation, and sample number.

  2. 2

Choose one comparison while keeping strip size and dipping time consistent.

  3. 3

Apply cooled color with tools and place each labeled sample on a drying tray.

  4. 4

Compare wet and dried appearance under the same lighting; record unevenness or fading.

  5. 5

Make a sample card that distinguishes observed color from untested durability or skin-safety claims.

Evidence & interpretation

What the investigation shows

Plant pigments can color materials, but results depend on the plant, preparation, fiber, and conditions. A classroom color test does not establish washfastness or skin safety.

Practical connection

Why this work matters

Practice observation, decision-making, shared responsibilities, and communication through a concrete plant or materials task. Participants choose hands-on, planning, or recording roles.

Participation by choice

Individual access options

  • Offer speech, pointing, gaze, AAC, partner-assisted scanning, or a recorded choice. Follow individual vision and mobility plans. Present one or two items at a time; watching, declining, and taking a break are valid participation.
  • Use a seated-height tray, stabilized tools, large-print or picture instructions, and partner assistance chosen by the participant.
  • Reduce the number of comparisons or complete the planning and observation portions without handling materials.

Review & transfer

Reflect on the work

  • Which variable did you hold constant?
  • What additional testing would be needed before using the color on clothing?
