Build a Magnetic Retrieval and Tool System

Adult extension of: Magnet Magic / Will It Stick?

Adults test everyday materials, map magnetic attraction, and turn the results into a functional system for retrieving metal items or organizing lightweight tools.

01 · Learning

Objectives

  • Predict and test which objects respond to a magnet.
  • Measure how distance, barriers, and object mass change performance.
  • Build and quality-check a useful magnetic tool.

02 · Preparation

Materials

Encased magnets; magnetic wand; tray of steel and nonmagnetic objects; ruler; cardboard and fabric barriers; scale or counted fasteners; dowel or handle; tape or fasteners; labels; test sheet.

03 · Practice

Adult project

  1. 1

Sort objects by prediction before bringing the magnet near them.

  2. 2

Test each object and record material, attraction, and retrieval success.

  3. 3

Compare performance through one or more barrier layers.

  4. 4

Test how many standard fasteners the magnet can lift safely.

  5. 5

Build a pickup wand or lightweight organizer using the results.

  6. 6

Complete a drop, load, edge, label, and storage quality check.

Practical and therapeutic connection

Why this work matters

The mature application supports material identification, measurement, safe tool organization, cleanup, and engineering quality control.
