Audit a Compost System and Improve Material Sorting
Adult extension of: Compost – Nature Recycles
April 12–16, 2027 · planned
Use the actual system’s accepted-material rules to examine inputs, decomposition evidence, and a practical maintenance decision.
Curriculum skill focus: Sorting, decomposition, observation, care routines
01 · Learning
Objectives
- Identify the compost system and read its accepted and excluded material list.
- Compare photographs or contained samples from different stages without assuming a precise age from appearance.
- Create a clear input sign and assign the next observation or maintenance check.
02 · Preparation
Materials
Managed compost samples in closed containers or photographs; Approved material picture cards; Simple compost-system guide and care chart
03 · Practice
Adult project
- 1
Identify the compost system and read its accepted and excluded material list.
- 2
Sort sample cards into accepted, excluded, and verify-first categories.
- 3
Compare photographs or contained samples from different stages without assuming a precise age from appearance.
- 4
Review the system’s moisture, airflow, and maintenance instructions before choosing a care action.
- 5
Create a clear input sign and assign the next observation or maintenance check.
Evidence & interpretation
What the investigation shows
Microorganisms and other decomposers break down organic material. Composting takes time and suitable conditions; not every material belongs in every compost system.
Practical connection
Why this work matters
Practice observation, decision-making, shared responsibilities, and communication through a concrete plant or materials task. Participants choose hands-on, planning, or recording roles.
Participation by choice
Individual access options
- Offer speech, pointing, gaze, AAC, partner-assisted scanning, or a recorded choice. Follow individual vision and mobility plans. Present one or two items at a time; watching, declining, and taking a break are valid participation.
- Use a seated-height tray, stabilized tools, large-print or picture instructions, and partner assistance chosen by the participant.
- Reduce the number of comparisons or complete the planning and observation portions without handling materials.
Review & transfer
Reflect on the work
- Which item requires checking your system’s rules?
- What evidence of change can you record without opening the sample?
