Design a Compatible Terrarium or Combination Container

Adult extension of: Terrarium Ecosystems & Combination Container Planting

May 10–14, 2027 · planned

Compare moisture management in a terrarium and a draining planter, then select compatible plants and document care.

Curriculum skill focus: Comparing habitats, planning, assembling, plant care

01 · Learning

Objectives

  • Compare vessel ventilation, drainage, available light, and access for maintenance.
  • Trial the arrangement before planting, leaving room for growth and access to the substrate.
  • Record a monitoring plan for moisture, condensation where applicable, and plant condition.

02 · Preparation

Materials

Clear shatter-resistant terrarium and draining container; Screened plants with compatible care requirements; Prepared media, large scoops, labels and care cards

03 · Practice

Adult project

  1. 1

Compare vessel ventilation, drainage, available light, and access for maintenance.

  2. 2

Select identified plants with compatible moisture, light, and mature-size needs.

  3. 3

Trial the arrangement before planting, leaving room for growth and access to the substrate.

  4. 4

Plant in prepared media, add only the appropriate amount of water, and label the system.

  5. 5

Record a monitoring plan for moisture, condensation where applicable, and plant condition.

Evidence & interpretation

What the investigation shows

A terrarium changes humidity and water movement around plants. Closed and open containers suit different plants; drainage layers do not substitute for drainage holes in an ordinary pot.

Practical connection

Why this work matters

Practice observation, decision-making, shared responsibilities, and communication through a concrete plant or materials task. Participants choose hands-on, planning, or recording roles.

Participation by choice

Individual access options

  • Offer speech, pointing, gaze, AAC, partner-assisted scanning, or a recorded choice. Follow individual vision and mobility plans. Present one or two items at a time; watching, declining, and taking a break are valid participation.
  • Use a seated-height tray, stabilized tools, large-print or picture instructions, and partner assistance chosen by the participant.
  • Reduce the number of comparisons or complete the planning and observation portions without handling materials.

Review & transfer

Reflect on the work

  • Why would the same plant mix not suit every container?
  • What observation would prompt a moisture or ventilation check?
