Establish and Compare Seed-Starting Systems

Adult extension of: Seed Starting Lab & Hydroponic Gardening

March 15–19, 2027 · planned

Start a labeled crop and compare a conventional starter with a prepared hydroponic demonstration using a practical care log.

Curriculum skill focus: Sequencing, comparison, plant care, recording growth

01 · Learning

Objectives

  • Read the seed and system instructions; identify the crop and expected germination conditions.
  • Sow or position seeds in the prepared supports at the required depth and spacing.
  • Assign observation dates and record germination and root development before drawing conclusions.

02 · Preparation

Materials

Approved large seeds and covered alternatives for small seeds; Clean starter containers, moist growing medium, labeled water-growing demonstration; Adult-prepared supports and care chart

03 · Practice

Adult project

  1. 1

Read the seed and system instructions; identify the crop and expected germination conditions.

  2. 2

Label equal starting dates and choose a comparison that can be observed without promising equal growth.

  3. 3

Sow or position seeds in the prepared supports at the required depth and spacing.

  4. 4

Document water, light, support, and later nutrient needs for each system; adults prepare any nutrient solution.

  5. 5

Assign observation dates and record germination and root development before drawing conclusions.

Evidence & interpretation

What the investigation shows

Seeds germinate when their species-specific conditions are met. Longer-term hydroponic growth requires suitable support, light, oxygen, and mineral nutrients; plain water is not a complete growing plan.

Practical connection

Why this work matters

Practice observation, decision-making, shared responsibilities, and communication through a concrete plant or materials task. Participants choose hands-on, planning, or recording roles.

Participation by choice

Individual access options

  • Offer speech, pointing, gaze, AAC, partner-assisted scanning, or a recorded choice. Follow individual vision and mobility plans. Present one or two items at a time; watching, declining, and taking a break are valid participation.
  • Use a seated-height tray, stabilized tools, large-print or picture instructions, and partner assistance chosen by the participant.
  • Reduce the number of comparisons or complete the planning and observation portions without handling materials.

Review & transfer

Reflect on the work

  • What does a plant need after its seed reserves are used?
  • Which differences between the systems might affect the comparison?
