Run a Seed Dormancy Treatment Trial

Adult extension of: Seeds

Adults compare untreated seeds with soaking or cold-moist treatment, then track whether preparation changes germination time or percentage.

01 · Learning

Objectives

  • Explain why some seeds benefit from soaking or cold stratification.
  • Set up labeled treatment and control groups.
  • Calculate and compare germination outcomes.

02 · Preparation

Materials

Large bean seeds; a native or perennial seed with documented cold treatment; cups; water; damp paper towels; zip bags; refrigerator access; labels; magnifier; germination chart.

03 · Practice

Adult project

  1. 1

Examine seed coats and compare dry, soaked, and pre-chilled examples.

  2. 2

Create bean groups for untreated control and timed soaking.

  3. 3

Create a separate documented cold-treatment group and its control.

  4. 4

Use equal seed counts, moisture, labels, and observation intervals.

  5. 5

Record first germination, total germination, and any mold or damage.

  6. 6

Compare results and choose the better preparation for future planting.

Practical and therapeutic connection

Why this work matters

The lab develops experimental control, labeling, patience, data recording, and planning for future crop production.
